World Chess Cup – the third round

Administration, 03 December 2007

As it was expected, top seeds won most of the matches in rounds two and three. However, there were sensational defeats as well. Thus, Teymour Radjabov (Azerbaijan, 2742) dropped out of the Cup in the second lap, having lost with a lopsided score to Bartlomiej Macieja (Poland, 2606), the latter with a rating lower than Teymour’s by more than 150 points.

There were more sensations in the third round. Shakhryar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan, 2752) lost the match 1.5-0.5 to Ivan Cheparinov (Bulgaria, 2670), a young Bulgarian grandmaster and Veselin Topalov’s protege. Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine, 2787), the world blitz champion, lost to Dieter Nisipeanu (Romania, 2668) in the blitz game on the tiebreak. Evgeny Bareev (Russia, 2653) beat Alexander Grischuk (Russia, 2715), having defeated him on the tiebreak as well. Sergey Karjakin (Ukraine, 2694) managed to overcome Etienne Bacrot (France, 2695) on the tiebreak too.

Thus, there are 16 participants left to struggle for the cup: Karjakin-Nisipeanu

  • Cheparinov-Wang Yue
  • Ponomariov-Sasikiran
  • Aronian-Jakovenko
  • Akopian-Shirov
  • Svidler-Kamsky
  • Carlsen-Adams
  • Alekseev-Bareev
