There have been no big sensations at the World Chess Cup held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Siberia. Although many top seeds lost the first game (probably because of nervousness), they convincingly won the second game and the following tiebreak. Among these players are Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukraine, 2705), Evgeny Alekseev (Russia, 2716), Vladimir Akopian (Armenia, 2713) and others. Only Pentala Harikrishna (India, 2668) and Nigel Short (England, 2649) had a bad luck: the latter lost to David Baramidze (Germany, 2569), and the former – to Zhao Jun (China, 2552) on the tiebreak. The battle between Konstantin Sakaev (Russia, 2634) and Nikita Vitiugov (Russia, 2594), the winner of the Higher league, was the tensest and ended not until an “armageddon” (the seventh game of the match, a blitz game) won by Sakaev.
